Harry Dean Stanton: Partly Fiction

Harry Dean Stanton became world famous through countless Hollywood productions as a supporting actor. However, in Germany he is best known for his unforgettable ‘Travis’ in Wim Wenders’ Paris Texas, the only lead role he ever played. How do you get close to a totally taciturn actor who resolutely refuses to speak about his past? The Swiss actress Sophie Huber, who lives in Los Angeles, has known Stanton for 20 years. She has achieved something extraordinary: a sort of musical road movie that allows the actor keep his secrets while at the same time filmically eliciting insights into his life en passant. Brilliantly filmed by Seamus McGarvey, Huber has Stanton singing American folk songs. Selected film clips heighten the melancholic and knowing mood of this cinematic journey through New Hollywood’s history, in which we meet Wim Wenders, David Lynch, Sam Shepard, Kris Kristofferson, Debbie Harry, and a particular highlight, Stanton‘s barkeeper.
