Mike Kaplan and John Dorr shot this highly entertaining and rare glimpse at Robert Altman at work during the shooting of "Short Cuts". For his adaptation of the short stories by Raymond Carver (1938-1988), Altman was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1993. This "Making of" gives us an unusual insight into the development of this polyphonic and brilliantly composed episodic film, dealing with love and lies in suburban American life. Almost the whole film crew, Altman himself and Tess Gallagher (Raymond Carver’s widow) talk about the work of this splendid ensemble. "Here everyone has something to say, one feels that in many aspects there must have been a miracle, not only the miracle that a wonderful film evolved, but furthermore the behaviour between the people, how competition ends and develops into a common endeavor.
The film very beautifully reflects the way they worked together under Altman’s direction.” (Ingo Schulze, writer, member of the Academy of Arts / Akademie der Künste, August 2007). With Andie MacDowell, Julianne Moore, Tom Waits, Lili Taylor, Annie Ross, Tim Robbins, Lori Singer, Jack Lemmon, and many other special appearances.
